Order for 4 New Sustainable M-class Jet-driven Pilot Tenders
On December 22nd, Nederlands Loodswezen BV signed a contract for the construction of four M-class jet-driven pilot tenders at Next Generation Shipyards (NGS) from Lauwersoog. The vessels replace 4 Discovery class tenders from 1996 and will serve in the various pilot regions of the country.
A class apart The four new tenders are a further development of the 'Mira'; a sustainable tender design from 2020, with a fuel saving of 30% achieved through weight savings, smart technology and an improved hull design. The new ships, like the 'Mira', were designed by ship designer Camarc.
Reducing the CO 2 footprint
At Loodswezen, we strive to operate as sustainably as possible. “Within the current technical possibilities, we have been looking for a ship type for some time that allows us to reduce our CO2 footprint, without making concessions to the quality of our services.” says director Herman Broers.
The necessary financing for this extensive project has been obtained from Bank Nederlandse Gemeenten (BNG), which also played a role in financing the large pilot vessels from 2010.
Shipbuilder Next Generation Shipyards
Once again we have chosen to have the ships built at NGS from Lauwersoog. Broers: “During the construction of the 'Mira' and the subsequent improvements to the design of this pilot tender, we were impressed by the craftsmanship and innovative capacity of this young shipyard in the north of Groningen.” The four tenders must be commissioned in 2023, 2024 and 2025.
Dirk Keizer, director of NGS, indicates that he is very happy with the confidence of the Loodswezen. “We will do everything we can to complete this assignment satisfactorily.” For NGS, where approximately 70 employees find their work, this order means a good prospect and a good filling of its capacity. The CO 2 footprint is also taken into account during construction. With solar panels, for example, more energy is generated per year than is used annually at the yard.
